These crispy onion rings are golden on the outside, tender on the inside, and full of savory flavor. Made with sweet onions, a simple seasoned batter, and a crunchy breadcrumb coating, they are perfect as an appetizer, side dish, or game-day snack. Serve them hot with your favorite dipping sauce for the best texture and taste.
Ingredients
- 2 large sweet onions
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- 2 large eggs
- 3/4 cup milk
- 2 cups breadcrumbs or panko
- Vegetable oil, for frying
Instructions
- Peel the onions and slice them into thick rings about 1/4 inch wide. Separate the rings and set them aside.
- In one bowl, mix the flour, baking powder, salt, black pepper, and paprika.
- In a second bowl, whisk together the eggs and milk.
- Place the breadcrumbs or panko in a third bowl.
- Dip each onion ring in the seasoned flour, then in the egg mixture, and finally coat with breadcrumbs. For a thicker crust, repeat the egg and breadcrumb step once more.
- Heat about 2 inches of vegetable oil in a deep skillet or pot to 350 degrees F, or until a small breadcrumb sizzles immediately when added.
- Fry the onion rings in batches for 2 to 3 minutes per side, until golden brown and crisp. Do not overcrowd the pan.
- Remove the onion rings with a slotted spoon and drain on a paper towel-lined plate.
- Serve immediately with ketchup, ranch, or your favorite dipping sauce.
