This cheesy gratin potatoes recipe is rich, cozy, and perfect for family dinners, holidays, or any meal that needs a comforting side dish. Thinly sliced potatoes are layered with garlic cream, butter, and cheese, then baked until tender inside and beautifully golden on top.
Ingredients
- 2 pounds potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, plus more for greasing
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 cups heavy cream
- 1 cup whole milk
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 2 cups shredded Gruyere cheese
- 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley, optional
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F and lightly butter a baking dish.
- In a saucepan over medium heat, combine the cream, milk, garlic, salt, pepper, and nutmeg. Warm gently until steaming, but do not boil.
- Arrange half of the potato slices in the baking dish, slightly overlapping them.
- Pour half of the warm cream mixture over the potatoes, then sprinkle with half of the Gruyere and Parmesan.
- Repeat with the remaining potatoes, cream mixture, and cheeses.
- Dot the top with the butter and cover the dish with foil.
- Bake for 40 minutes, then remove the foil and bake for 15 to 20 minutes more, until the top is golden and the potatoes are tender.
- Let rest for 10 minutes before serving. Garnish with parsley if desired.
