  1. In a large bowl, combine the warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let stand for 5 to 10 minutes until foamy.
  2. Add the oil, salt, and 3 cups of the flour. Mix until a shaggy dough forms.
  3. Add the remaining flour gradually until the dough is soft and slightly tacky but not sticky.
  4. Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for 8 to 10 minutes, until smooth and elastic.
  5. Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a clean towel or plastic wrap, and let rise in a warm place for 1 to 1 1/2 hours, or until doubled in size.
  6. Punch down the dough gently and shape it into a loaf. Place it in a greased loaf pan.
  7. Cover again and let rise for 30 to 40 minutes, until puffy and near the top of the pan.
  8. Preheat the oven to 375 F or 190 C.
  9. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes, until the bread is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
  10. Remove from the pan and brush with melted butter if desired. Let cool on a wire rack before slicing.
