This homemade bread recipe delivers a soft, fluffy crumb with a golden crust and a comforting fresh-baked aroma. It uses simple pantry ingredients and a straightforward method, making it perfect for beginners and experienced bakers alike. Serve it warm with butter, jam, soups, or savory meals.
Ingredients
- 3 and 1/2 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting
- 2 and 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup warm water, about 110 F or 43 C
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil, plus more for greasing
- 1 tablespoon melted butter, optional for brushing
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine the warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let stand for 5 to 10 minutes until foamy.
- Add the oil, salt, and 3 cups of the flour. Mix until a shaggy dough forms.
- Add the remaining flour gradually until the dough is soft and slightly tacky but not sticky.
- Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for 8 to 10 minutes, until smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a clean towel or plastic wrap, and let rise in a warm place for 1 to 1 1/2 hours, or until doubled in size.
- Punch down the dough gently and shape it into a loaf. Place it in a greased loaf pan.
- Cover again and let rise for 30 to 40 minutes, until puffy and near the top of the pan.
- Preheat the oven to 375 F or 190 C.
- Bake for 30 to 35 minutes, until the bread is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
- Remove from the pan and brush with melted butter if desired. Let cool on a wire rack before slicing.
