Bread pudding is a timeless baked dessert that transforms stale bread into a soft, fragrant, and satisfying treat. With a rich custard made from milk, eggs, sugar, vanilla, and cinnamon, this version bakes into a golden pudding with a tender center and lightly crisp top. It is simple to prepare, budget-friendly, and perfect for family desserts or special occasions.
Ingredients
- 6 cups day-old bread, cut into cubes
- 2 cups whole milk
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 3 large eggs
- 3/4 cup granulated sugar
- 2 tablespoons melted butter
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup raisins, optional
- 1 tablespoon butter, for greasing the baking dish
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350 F and grease a medium baking dish with butter.
- Place the bread cubes in the prepared dish and sprinkle the raisins over them if using.
- In a large bowl, whisk together the milk, cream, eggs, sugar, melted butter, vanilla, cinnamon, and salt until smooth.
- Pour the custard mixture evenly over the bread. Press the bread down gently so it absorbs the liquid.
- Let the mixture rest for 10 minutes so the bread softens.
- Bake for 40 to 45 minutes, or until the top is golden and the center is set but still slightly soft.
- Remove from the oven and cool for at least 10 minutes before serving warm.
