Ingredients

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 400 F. Place one pie crust into a 9-inch pie dish and press it gently into the bottom and sides.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples, granulated sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice. Toss until the apples are evenly coated.
  3. Spoon the apple mixture into the prepared crust and dot the top with the butter pieces.
  4. Cover with the second pie crust, or cut it into strips for a lattice top if preferred. Trim and seal the edges, then cut a few small slits in the top crust if fully covered.
  5. Whisk the egg and milk together, then brush the top crust with the egg wash. Sprinkle with coarse sugar if using.
  6. Bake for 20 minutes at 400 F, then reduce the oven temperature to 350 F and continue baking for 30 to 35 minutes, until the crust is golden and the filling is bubbling.
  7. Remove from the oven and let the pie cool for at least 2 hours before slicing so the filling can set.
