It is a timeless baked dessert that works beautifully for family meals, holidays, or any occasion when you want a comforting homemade treat. Ingredients
- 2 pie crusts, homemade or store-bought
- 6 medium apples, peeled, cored, and thinly sliced
- 3/4 cup granulated sugar
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1 tablespoon unsalted butter, cut into small pieces
- 1 egg, beaten, for egg wash
- 1 tablespoon milk, for egg wash
- 1 tablespoon coarse sugar, optional
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 400 F. Place one pie crust into a 9-inch pie dish and press it gently into the bottom and sides.
- In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples, granulated sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice. Toss until the apples are evenly coated.
- Spoon the apple mixture into the prepared crust and dot the top with the butter pieces.
- Cover with the second pie crust, or cut it into strips for a lattice top if preferred. Trim and seal the edges, then cut a few small slits in the top crust if fully covered.
- Whisk the egg and milk together, then brush the top crust with the egg wash. Sprinkle with coarse sugar if using.
- Bake for 20 minutes at 400 F, then reduce the oven temperature to 350 F and continue baking for 30 to 35 minutes, until the crust is golden and the filling is bubbling.
- Remove from the oven and let the pie cool for at least 2 hours before slicing so the filling can set.
